I ran the 800 in college and spent the next ten years pretending I didn't miss racing. Then a friend dragged me to a HYROX in Houston. I finished in 1:14 with my lungs on fire and a huge grin, and that was that.
I've raced eleven since, coached a lot more, and it's most of what I do now. My thing is compromised running — the part where you get off the sled and your legs are gone. We train that on purpose, every week, until it stops being scary.
First-timers, people chasing a sub-70, doubles pairs who want to stop arguing at the wall balls: all welcome. I coach at Forge on the east side, run small groups Tuesday and Thursday nights, and write online blocks for anyone racing anywhere.

I'm 52 and hadn't raced anything since my thirties. Maya scaled everything without making me feel like the old lady in the room. Finished Houston, cried at the finish, signing up again.
Great coach, brutal sled sessions. Only reason for four stars is the Thursday class fills up fast and I've been waitlisted twice. Program is dialed and she genuinely watches your form.
My partner and I trained for doubles with Maya and she basically saved our relationship at the wall balls. Seriously though: the split strategy she wrote for us was the difference between finishing and a podium.
Came from CrossFit thinking the stations would be easy and the running would be the problem. She fixed the running. Took 11 minutes off between my first and second race, most of it in the back four runs.
Signed up for my first HYROX with zero idea what a sled felt like. Maya's 12-week block got me to Dallas in 1:38 and I never once felt lost on race day — she walks you through the roxzone, the pacing, all of it. Already booked the next one.
